As a local OC native, this has always been the most popular Japanese curry place to go to as there's always a one hour wait. Pork Omelette (4/5): Even though I still think this place is overrated, it was still delicious. The portion size is a bit small for my preference. First time getting the egg and I thought it wasn't too special.
I've only recently started loving Japanese curry in the last 5 years and so glad bf sis recommended this spot to us to try. Located in the Diamond Jamboree, I typically stop at Haidailao. I can't believe I slept on this place! The curry was amazing! The omelette curry was so good and my favorite! I got the vegetable curry too and def will try other options in the future. I would have preferred the vegetables to be more stew like in the curry. This only warrants me to try more of their options! The spice options is the icing on top! Bf and I can tolerate spice and the 10 spice... sooo good! Our server was so kind and helpful! Great customer service!!! I didn't get his name, but he made our first experience here very memorable. He explained everything and made recommendations. Can't wait to return!
Grabbing a table through the kiosk was quick and easy. The regular curry was amazing and I can't wait to return!
Overall - a really tasty Japanese curry spot. I would recommend the pork cutlet over the chicken cutlet! A bit more juicy, but the chicken was more crispy. They were very generous with their rice portion! If only I had more curry to balance out the rice. I added vegetables to my curry, but honestly it was negligible. I'd get it without veggies next time. The curry itself was very soupy; I wanted it to be a thicker consistency. FYI: they are open on July 4th :)
We joined the waitlist for this location as it gets extremely busy during lunch time. Because of the waitlist, we did not need to wait more than 20 minutes. When we got seated, the menu is accessed through a QR code, and like in Japan, there is a buzzer at each table to call for service. We ordered the Vegetable & Chicken Cutlet Curry and the Okra & Vegetables Curry with Potato croquette at mild spice. We did not need to wait long for our food. Both dishes were extremely good and on par with the Coco Ichibanya we had in Japan. The curry was flavorful and the deep fried proteins were perfectly cooked and didn't have too much breading. I do wish they put more curry with the dish as I do think the locations in Japan give slightly more curry, but overall, this met our expectations as far as quality. Will definitely return here again as we like that it is near all these other Asian shops. I will note, however, that their gender-neutral restroom be cleaned more often; I used it once and thought it did not match the restaurant at all as far as cleanliness.
CoCo is a great place if you are ever in the mood for some Japanese curry. With a large selection of toppings and even spice levels up to 20(?!), I could return again and again to try something different. My group had to wait about 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon around 5pm, but that is typical. Once we were seated, our server was very attentive and our orders came out quickly and accurately. I got the stewed beef curry with vegetables because I wanted to start with something basic. Everything tasted good and I wish I went a little fancier with my order. Overall, had a nice time, service was great, and I would return.
This was a very filling meal! The chicken katsu was perfectly crisped and the vegetables were all super tender. I enjoyed having the buttons to press for service because they came quickly and were attentive when needed. Be prepared to wait for a table because this was a great spot, and for good reason!
My absolute favorite curry spot! The service is quick and the restaurant is clean and cozy. The servers are super nice and very attentive. The curry here is my favorite because it has the right consistency, not too thick and chunky but not too thin and watery either. If you can handle spice I suggest level 3 and above but if you're a baby like my bf (LOL JK) get level 2. Level 1 is way too bland so I wouldn't recommend it. My go to order is chicken cutlet but I was adventurous today and got the thin sliced beef. It was my bf's first time here so he ordered the chicken cutlet omelet curry and it was huge! Definitely share that one if you get it. We also got garlic fries to share and absolutely flavorful, crispy and fluffy packed with delicious garlic flavor and the perfect portion to share! We both licked our plates clean so 10/10 recommend this spot. P.S I am a UCI alumni so you already know I went here every week during my undergraduate studies
